UGLY ACCENT is an emerging literary journal
involved in a bloody struggle to publish quality
fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction.
We are not affiliated with a university and we aren’t a subsidiary of a larger, more established journal.
We are sincerely for those who think
the Midwest is the new black.

OUR MISSION
We put forth a challenge to all of our readers, to find that inherent degree of separation between you and the good ole heartland. We don't want stories
about cows and cheese, although those won't necessarily be shunned,
but we do require a commitment to this theory.
Based out of Madison, Wisconsin, the focus of our journal is not only to publish exceptional writing, but also to glorify the coveted talent that this region breeds. UGLY ACCENT strives to become a vehicle of local literary exposure, giving voice to the long overdue yet too-unique-to-be-ignored Midwestern experience.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
OUR CONTENT
Our semi-annual periodical includes a selection of hand picked poetry, short fiction, and other prose to startle, disturb and comfort our readers. We don’t publish an author because we recognize their name, or due to their laundry list of credentials. We just publish good writing. Period. We are also proud to feature a handful of essays, book reviews and literary resources in our online archives,
which are growing in tandem to our burgeoning readership.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
OUR READERS
Our readers are independent thinkers, casual readers, former Liberal Arts majors, and above all, appreciative (or curious at the very least) of Midwestern contributions in the literary field. They are proud to call the good ole heartland their home, or fake it, if they’re not from around here. We launched the premier issue of UGLY ACCENT in the Fall of 2006 and look to expand our readership with each issue with the sincere hope of stirring up some Midwestern soil.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN
The inception of UGLY ACCENT dates way back to the year 2005. The idea was mainly the product of a conversation between three coffee shop employees who are now the founding editors of UGLY ACCENT. Two English graduates and one History buff, all marginally employed in the service industry since obtaining their valuable degrees, the resolution was made that, that year would be the year when their education would be put to use, whether someone paid them to or not.
So they decided to start a literary journal.
And here we are, years later, in the midst of submissions, layout design, and editorial coffee sessions. It's like nothing we could have imagined, yet, everything we could ever want. So thanks for your interest in the Midwest's newest literary collection. If you're interested in submitting your work, drop by the submissions page for detailed guidelines on what we're looking for in the areas of fiction, poetry and nonfiction.
