Mark Polege

Artist's Statement: "My photography began as a historical record of my personal discoveries, both physical and emotional. I wanted to remember the places I had found in a certain way, dramatic, powerful, and atmospheric. Time never ceases & so each & every photograph is a record, historical by its essence. I've photographed in both black & white & color, but black & white speaks to me more. The shapes, the shadows, the textures, it is an almost haunting capture of the things we are today but will never be again. To me, black & white photography has that power, instant and eternal." — Mark Polege

Hilary Berg

Hilary Berg is an artist and bookseller, born and raised in Southwestern Wisconsin. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Art and has since worked in bookstores both in Madison, Wisconsin and Portland, Oregon.  She currently lives in Mazomanie, Wisconsin. More of her work available at http://hilaryberg.googlepages.com

Artist's Statement: "For the past seven years, my work has mainly consisted of mixed-media drawings on high-quality paper.  Using ink wash, pen & ink, colored pencil, graphite and collage, I create visual layers, which allow the viewer to move through the image and find moments of dreamlike quietude.  My work is informed by the concepts of collecting, dreams, history, stories, memory and language.  I strive towards the haunting and sometimes whimsical imagery of nature, dreams and decay.   I like to add bits of story, imagination and history to my work in order to push it past the literal to a place that evokes the emotion that shifts just beneath the surface of our thoughts.  The current cycle of drawings I am working on is about seeds; incorporating elements of botany and allusions to botanical illustration, history, language and taxonomy.  These drawings also explore the voices, imaginations and memories of the plants themselves." - Hilary Berg
